FAQ
Yes. That said, the coating that we now use is low VOC and environmentally friendly. The new lower VOC coating results in a significantly lower smell that dissipates much quicker than older technology – without sacrificing any of the strength and durability our work is known for. We run a ventilation system out of the door or window to reduce the smell.
The finish that we apply is called an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane. It's a 2-part urethane invented by NASA several years ago. It is now used anywhere that a hard, long-lasting, durable finish is needed. Other examples would be airliners and oceanliners. The advantages of this finish over other products are:
- Resistance to abrasion and scratching (holds up to normal wear and tear)
- Impact resistance (won't crack or chip if you drop a shampoo bottle)
- Resistance to extreme temperatures
- Color retention (won't yellow like epoxy coatings)
- This finish has been modified for use in the resurfacing industry.
You should not use abrasive cleaners like Comet or Ajax, even Soft Scrub has some mild abrasives in it. However, you won't need to use abrasive cleaners since the new finish will be non-porous and the dirt and grime should wipe away much easier than before. You can use any liquid dish soap with a degreaser for cleaning.
Most kitchen countertops can be resurfaced in less than 4 hours. However, the countertop should not be used for 24 hours after we are through. Our RenewStone Countertops are designed to look like granite, quartz and other solid stone surface finishes. The result is an updated look to your kitchen or bathroom at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Unlike the other items that we refinish, we cannot give you a definite price on our website. There are a number of variables that go into determining the price. Obviously, the most important is the size of the countertop. We are happy to come out and provide you with a no cost estimate. We can also show you samples at that time for you to look at in your own kitchen. Typically, the cost to refinish a kitchen countertop is between $300 and $700 depending on the size and type of finish that you select.
After making sure that the countertop is completely clean, we sand the countertop. This sanding takes off the gloss from the original finish and etches the surface. Millions of microscopic holes are opened on the original surface of the countertop. This will allow the new finish to penetrate into the old surface and create an outstanding bond. We then mix a colored resin with a catalyst. A chemical reaction takes place and the new finish begins to harden. We have a couple of hours to work with it while it is still a liquid. The finish coat is then applied to the countertop using a spray system. It then penetrates and bonds onto the old surface. Because the new finish is applied as a liquid, it molds to the old countertop. You will also find that your countertop will now be non-porous and should clean much easier than before. The result is a countertop that looks better, lasts longer, and cleans easier.
The main reason that most customers resurface their countertops is to change the color. Many kitchens have countertops that are in good shape, but the color is out of date. They are tired of having to decorate around old, outdated colors. At Surface Renew, we apply a new finish over the existing countertop. The color is changed without having to go through the time and expense of replacement. You will get a new finish that will look like a new countertop. The new finish is strong and durable enough to last for many years. Your new finish will act like a laminate surface; if you cut it with a sharp knife – it will have a cut mark; if you place a scalding hot pan on it – it will burn. In other words, you will have to take the same precautions not to damage the surface as with any countertop. However, if you do damage the new finish – it can be touched up since it is applied as a liquid. This cannot be done on a new laminate countertop.
We do kitchen countertops for commercial and fix + flip clients. We don’t do kitchen countertops for traditional residential customers.
